Below are poems written by four grade 6 classes. They are about maths content and processes, or just about maths feelings. Enjoy!
6B - Basilisks
The Rules of Fractions
The rules of fractions are as simple as pie,
Learn them at your own risk otherwise good-bye.
When adding some fractions as one,
Make denominators the same, you’re soon done.
The last step has no stress,
Just add numerators and the answer’s success!
Subtracting is pretty much the same,
Just take one numerator from the other and you’re in the game.
Multiplying fractions is a different matter,
But you’ll soon learn this without a splatter.
Go ahead and multiply the bottom with the bottom.
Then do the same with the tops and you got’m.
Last, but not least, there is fraction division.
This brings you a whole new vision.
Invert the divisor then switch method of calculation.
Instead of division you now use multiplication.
Then simplify and everything turns to its realization.
Since you now know the way to do it,
I’ll tell you a way to quickly get through it.
Use a tiny number generator,
That is known as a calculator.
First, the numerator, it’s on top,
Second, the denominator it’s at the bottom
With a line that represents division in between, they make up a fraction that is clearly seen
For Addition and Subtraction,
change the denominator to the same
add or subtract only the numerators,
the denominator stays the same.
If the answer has numerator larger than
change into a mixed number.

When multiplying fractions
Here are simple rules:
First multiply the numerators
Then you do the denominators
And get your final answer.
With mixed numbers,
It’s a slightly different story.
And if there’re any blunders
Please try again, and hurry!
Convert all mixed numbers into fractions by
Multiplying the denominator
By its whole number, then
Adding it to the numerator.
Place that answer
And there you have it
An oversized fraction!
Follow those same rules
At the very top.
And you’ll have your final answer!

Adding Two Fractions
Adding two fractions
Is really quite simple
And much less painful than popping a pimple!
If we’re lucky
The bottoms are already equal
Add the tops in a sequel
And there’s your result.
Oh, oooh no!
The bottoms aren’t the same number
This might hurt
Oh dear, what a bummer!
‘It’s still easy’ claims Ms.Maggie
Find the L.C.D. (lowest common denominator)
And make those bottoms equal
Then, if you change the bottom, you must change the top!
Then add the new tops in a sequel.
The answer must be simplified?
Divide the top and bottom
By the same number
From top to bottom
And bottom to top.
I got it, I got it!
Here’s a short little poem, for you to remember
What fractions are,
To make it clearer
Fractions are numbers, less than a whole
To be added together, just in a scroll
They also can be subtracted, too
And are used everywhere, including the zoo.
Fractions have bottoms and tops
And improper fractions, are when they’re swapped
Mixed numbers - a whole and a fraction
Which are combined together in attraction
So that’s kinda what fractions are
Even though they’re slightly bizarre
Subtraction of Fractions
Subtraction of fractions is as easy as it goes.
Change mixed numbers to improper fractions
Multiply denominators to be the same number.
If it’s 2/8 – 1/4 then multiply the four by two
Multiply numerators just like denominators - this makes equivalent fractions.
Then take second numerator from the first,
Check if it’s simplified and check if it’s mixed
So go on, give it a go!
Polygons are shapes,
3 sides or more.
They come in all sizes
With angles for sure.
Triangles, squares and pentagons too,
You might even find them on a friend’s shoe.
Why can’t you use circles? They can’t be round!
You may even see some right on the ground.
They cannot be curved, the lines have to meet
The lines can’t cross over
Don’t draw on your sheet.

The product of two numbers is a multiple
Factors are the numbers which form a multiple.
A number with only two factors is a prime number,
The factors are one and the number itself.
A composite number has more than two factors
Now that you know your numbers
You can do wonders!
Polygons, polygons have different shapes.
Polygons, polygons have different names!
Polygons, polygons come with different angles.
Polygons, polygons are a triangle.
Triangles, triangles have 3 sides.
A triangle, triangle is a polygon.
Polygons, polygons have shapes,
They have sides that can go to 3 to 12.
Polygons, polygons are many shapes!
And don’t forget that polygons are the best!
They can be orange, blue
And bright pink too!
Squares are quadrilaterals,
Hexagons are polygons
But circles aren’t “rollygons!”
They all have an angle sum
But they won’t look like a cherry plum!
They can have rotation symmetry
Or reflection symmetry
Bee hives have hexagons all over
Like there are hearts on a clover.
Put some polygons together and you will get a tile pattern
Watch out as it might shattern!
Polygons can be 3D when they stand out
And they can be 2D ‘n stay flat no doubt!
A triangle can have an obtuse angle,
The above vertex stands while the two below vertices dangle!
They are here, they are there
They are everywhere!
They can be clocks
And boxes on the docks!
So, what are they?
Hmmm….? I wonder!
They are Shapes!
I am Zero no hero,
I can’t be subtracted or added
I can’t be multiplied or divided.
I am no prime, no composite, no abundant, nothing!
I can’t be a fraction, can’t be whole,
I can’t be half, just Zero plain Zero.
BEING A PRIME

I can be subtracted and added but I’m fine the way I am.

True: 0, 2,4,6,8 are even
True: 1, 3,5,7,9 are odd
False: The number in the 10's place shows if the number is even or odd.
If this is correct you get a shirt!

Algorithm Ballad: Multiplying Fractions
Multiplying fractions is a piece of cake.
Come here and I’ll show it to you in a shake.
FIRST you multiply Numerator by Numerator
THEN do the same with Denominator times Denominator.
Let’s give it a try - ½ multiplied by ¾
1 times 3 = 3
2 times 4 = 8
For the finishing touches you will write your answer down,
Otherwise you will turn into a funny looking clown.

In math we are learning about fractions

Like adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing
We have special words for the number on top and on the bottom
No, its not cotton
They are called the numerator and the denominator
Fraction questions can be solved in different ways
Fractions questions can be solved on all days
To add them, we need to find the LCM for the denominator
It’s not a prime factor!
To subtract fractions we do the same thing
Find the LCM, you’ll get it in a “ding”!!
For multiplication we do something different
We change mixed to improper, which is the same percent
And simplify at the end
Division is trickier
So let’s say it’s just pickier
You change mixed to improper, and rotate divisor’s N & D around
Guess what? The correct answer is what you’ve found!!

Well here’s a suggestion!!
We use clay, blocks and shapes
They all help a lot, but I must say
The one that confuses me
Is the clay!!!
Math isn’t boring, math isn’t fun, but it teaches something to everyone.
You need a Numerator and Denominator to make a good fraction,
And with an Algorithm, math’s really in action.
A Number Sentence is made up of symbols*, and numbers,
And you can do the F.A.S Method* by slicing cucumbers.
A Fact Family is made of number sentences, its where numbers get together, making math a lot easier, and better.
Denominator: The number written at the bottom of the fraction.
Numerator: The number written at the top of the fraction.
Algorithm: A method for performing a procedure.
Number sentence: A sentence made only out of numbers, and symbols, no words.
Fact Family: A set of related addition, and subtraction, or division, and multiplication sentences
E.g. 5+4=9, 4+5=9, 9 – 5=4, 9 – 4=5
*1: Symbols as in +, -, x, /, etc.
*2: Fraction Addition, and Subtraction Method.

There are many angles in a shape

An even number can be always divided by two
So 4,6,8,and 10 are even too

Around the world or even behind your driving lot!
When you use geometry you use shapes
You should use the ones that are polygons so no circles like grapes.
An acute angle is less than 90 degrees
And an obtuse angle is more than 90 degrees and if it’s 180 degrees it could be straight like the trees.
There are also odd numbers like one, three, and five
An odd number is not a multiple of two so got to take a long drive
‘cos you never can find a factor in five.
You use math so much there’s even world math day now
You should go and play the games in the site and you won’t be a cow.
6 D - Dragons

Change to mixed numbers.
Follow this rule,
And you’ll be cool!
Now Fractions are as easy as A, B, C
You just gotta listen carefully and follow me
Now in a fraction in the middle there is a line
Like the one in this cool fraction 7/9
up top of the fraction is the numerator
‘N way down low’s the denominator
Now when the fraction is 2/3 that means
just That it’s 2 out of 3 as it can be seen
But if the fraction is 5/4 that means
That it becomes a Mixed number 1 ¼ you see
So that’s all about fractions that you should know

Find Least Common Denominator
Of the two fractions,
Now you’re getting just the right actions!
Just remember, LCD means LCM,
Least Common Multiple

Change those denominators to LCDs,
You’re nearly there,
Now can’t you see?
What you do to the bottom
You do to the top
You just can’t stop!
Multiply carefully and you will see
Equivalents are as easy as A, B,C!

We're going to learn about polygons for the day
A polygon is a group of line segments put together in a special way.
Polygons come in different groups, different kinds
but all are made up of straight lines.
Do polygons have lines that intersect?
No, please double check.
The line segments in polygons are called sides,
the point where two line sides meet is called a vertex.
Here are some polygons:
pentagon, hexagon, heptagon, octagon, nonagon, decagon, dodecagon, triangle and quadrilateral

When making a fact family here’s how it goes.
You add two numbers and give it a go.
You add the same numbers but only go backwards!
Now you’ve three numbers all in a row!
After you got that, here comes subtraction.
That means you’ve got to reverse all the action
Get your first number and take from the sum,
Do that for your second – now don’t go numb!
After you got that you’re now all done.
Maybe now you give it a try?
Just try a small bite!
Do it correctly and you’ll be right!
Use that sum and subtract it from

The Mathematician & Me
There once was a mathematician,
Who didn’t know addition,
So I taught him with fractions
Said, ‘Just watch my actions,
Diagrams are the way to go
Sit down here and you I’ll show!’
I quickly drew a diagram
While he nibbled on turkey ham.
I cut the diagram into thirds
Then grouped these fractions into herds.
I drew a drawing of a half and then I cut this into half
I told him ‘don’t massage your calf,
‘cos when you do it makes me barf!’
I found equivalent fractions for denominators three and two
The answer was six and he said ‘Woohoo!
I think that I can do this now
And I guess you’ve told me how.’
So he added them without a sound
And the answer five sixths was what he found.
He said ‘Now I can work in fractions
That gives me such great satisfaction!’
The Number Nine
The number nine is mighty fine
It's easy to compute
It's a favourite number of mine
There really is no dispute
If the digits of a number
Add to equal nine
Then you know that number
Is divisible by nine
I have four right angles
My sides are all the same length
This makes me a square
Mixed Number to Improper Fraction
If you don’t want a mixed number
Then don’t just sit there like fallen lumber –
All you have to do
Is follow through steps one and two.
Multiply the whole by the denominator
And you will be a fraction dominator!
Add the product to the numerator
So – just like that, WHAM, BOOM-erator
Now you can get back to your beauty slumber.
When she talks about Prime Times,
When she explains about Shapes and Designs,
I fight, and my logic resigns.
If the angle is right or acute,
If the angle is reflex or obtuse,
Still, my mind says, “just refuse!”
But when it comes to divisions,
My soul and heart have visions,
And my brain goes on a mission.
Divisions I calculate in 4 dimensions,
Without any hesitations.
Let me tell you about the operations.
In my head I place the numerator,
At my feet I locate the denominator,
And somewhere in between there is the fraction creator.
And with great precision,
The division becomes an intuition.

For finding equivalent fractions, there’s a rule that’s cool:
You must multiply the bottom, bottom, bottom, if you multiply the top, top, top.

You don’t even have to be smart, you just have to try.
It is helpful to you when you grow older and it will make life easier.
That’s why math is so important, it is important to everyone even you,
so why don’t you give it a chance?

How do you find the area of a circle??
Well a circle has a lot of radius, radius, ra-ra-radius.
Radius is the half of a dia-dia-dia-diameter.
Then you use a pi, pi, pi.
You times the pi with the radius, radius, ra-ra-radius
And you will have the area.
